The Wendelstein
The Wendelstein is a 1838 m high mountain in the Bavarian Alps. It belongs to the Mangfall Mountains, the eastern part of the Bavarian Prealps. It is the highest peak of the Wendelstein massif. It is a special mountain for us in the Bavarian Inn Valley.
It is distinctive and, with its clearly visible observatory, serves as a guidepost towards home :-).
As children, it was our mountain for skiing. We could sometimes take our skis on the school bus and after school we'd go straight to the valley station of the cog railway to ride up to our favorite ski area. A 10-ride pass cost an unbelievable 100 DM back then. I'll always remember the exhilarating rides down to the Mitteralm to catch the cable car back up.
Finally, the journey always involved taking the long way down to Brannenburg to the valley station of the cog railway.
Moonlight trips to the Wendelstein
Spending an evening high up on the Wendelstein mountain is definitely a very special experience. The "Moonlight Ride" takes you up to the Wendelsteinhaus mountain hut on lovingly maintained vintage train sets dating back to 1912.
Even during the 55-minute journey on Germany's oldest mountain railway, you truly "decelerate." It's not just technology and railway enthusiasts who are captivated: the passenger cars, furnished with original, rustic wooden benches and luggage nets, as well as the locomotive, date back to the Wendelstein Railway's founding era. Some impressions in the slideshow from our moonlight trip on May 9th, during which the moon even made an appearance at the end of the trip :-). The food at the Wendelsteinhaus was also "really good"!
The musical accompaniment during dinner rounded off the evening.
A truly wonderful event that we were fortunate enough to experience. We can definitely recommend it!!
